Understanding Boning
Boning is the architecture inside a bodice. It holds the silhouette upright when the wearer moves. Learn what boning is, where it lives, and when you need more or less of it.

Why bodices need boning
A fitted bodice without boning collapses when the wearer sits or bends. Boning is the internal structure that lets a bodice hold its shape regardless of the wearers movement. The garment looks the same when she walks the aisle as it did when she stepped out of the dressing room.
Three common materials
Plastic boning is light, cheap, and good for casual bodices. Spiral steel boning is the couture standard; it flexes with the body. Spring steel boning is rigid and used at the very front of corsets where structure must be uncompromising.
Where bones live
Boning lives inside channels sewn between the lining and the outer fabric. A standard fitted bodice uses 4 to 6 bones; a corseted bodice uses 8 to 12; a heavily structured couture bodice can use 16 or more.
Bones and silhouette
More bones = stiffer silhouette = stronger waist definition. Fewer bones = softer drape = more natural fit. The decision is editorial: a bridal couture bodice wants 12 bones; a soft evening gown wants 4.
