SHORT DESCRIPTION, 50 WORDS
Akwa is a fashion technology company building Responsible AI for fashion intelligence, for fashion of any origin, from Western tailoring to African, South Asian, Gulf, and modest traditions. Design is human-led: users describe or draw their look, and Akwa generates a visual design and a structured production brief their tailor can work from directly. Covering 16+ cultural style origins, Akwa is built on the principle of origin-native design.
LONG DESCRIPTION, 200 WORDS
Akwa is a fashion technology company building Responsible AI for fashion intelligence, for cultures that have been underserved, and underestimated, by existing design tools.
Most AI fashion platforms generate for a default world: Western silhouettes, European cuts, vague approximations of cultures they have never taken the time to understand. Akwa starts somewhere different. Its cultural fashion ontology covers 16+ style origins, including Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa/Fulani, Edo/Benin, Efik/Calabar, Gulf/GCC, Turkish, Indonesian, Central Asian, South Asian, UK Diaspora, and Pan-Nigerian, with eight regional modest fashion traditions treated as first-class design categories.
The platform translates fashion ideas into the language of tailoring: not just visual designs, but structured production briefs with silhouette specifications, fabric behaviour notes, trim placement, and construction sequence. Clients describe their look; Akwa delivers a brief their tailor can work from directly.
Akwa calls this approach origin-native design, a new category of AI-assisted design where cultural origin is the structural foundation, not a modifier.
Founded in 2026 by Egoyibo Okoro, a Nigerian-born lawyer and technologist based in Rotterdam, Akwa is available globally on web, iOS, and Android at akwa.design.

The problem
Occasion and heritage fashion, across many traditions, is almost entirely custom-made. Customers go to tailors with screenshots, Pinterest boards, and rough descriptions. The outcome is often different from the vision, not because tailors lack skill, but because the brief lacks precision.
At the same time, AI tools that claim to generate "global" fashion consistently approximate cultural aesthetics from the outside, producing results that are immediately, obviously wrong to anyone who belongs to those cultures.
Akwa solves both problems: a precise brief for the tailor, and a generation system built from cultural intelligence rather than trained to approximate it.
The solution: origin-native design
Akwa coined the term origin-native design to name what it does and why it is different.
The design does not reference its cultural origin.
It lives inside it.
Origin-native design is AI-assisted fashion design where cultural origin is the structural foundation, not a stylistic modifier, not a prompt tag, not a filter applied to a generalist system.
This is a category distinction, not a feature distinction. A cultural filter on a generalist system is not origin-native. Origin-native design means the system is built from the culture, not pointed at it.

Suggested story angles
The cultural specificity problem in AI fashion
AI fashion tools consistently fail anyone whose fashion is not Western minimalism, from African and modest to South Asian and Gulf traditions, not from malice, but from architectural narrowness. Akwa is the first platform built to solve this from the ground up.
Origin-native design: a new category
Akwa coined the term origin-native design to describe a fundamentally different approach to AI-assisted fashion, one where cultural origin is the foundation, not a modifier. The category is new. The problem it solves is not.
A six-week prototype, by a lawyer
Egoyibo Okoro had no software engineering background when she decided to build Akwa. Six weeks later, a working prototype was live. What it grew into afterwards, a governed platform spanning design, production and commerce intelligence, is the more interesting half of the story.
The brief between client and tailor
Occasion and heritage fashion, across many traditions, is almost entirely custom-made. The gap between what a client imagines and what a tailor delivers is a brief problem. Akwa generates that brief in the language of tailoring, and changes the outcome.
