Choosing fabrics
Fabric choice is where the design starts to feel real. The same silhouette in mikado vs chiffon vs Aso-oke is three completely different garments. Akwa lets you pick the fabric explicitly, and the brief adapts.
How Akwa thinks about fabric
Akwa's fabric library is grouped by behaviour and cultural register, not just texture:
- African Heritage: Aso-oke, Ankara, George, Akwete, Adire, Atamfa, Kente. Each carries cultural weight; the brief surfaces that weight explicitly.
- Occasion and Bridal: Lace, brocade, mikado, duchess satin, tulle, organza, charmeuse. The structured-ceremony register.
- Contemporary: Wool crepe, silk crepe, ponte, cotton poplin, denim, jersey. The modern wardrobe register.
- Modest and Structured: Heavy crepe, Sadu weave, Talli, embroidered organza, structured satin. Modesty-first fabrics with body.
The fabric-to-silhouette compatibility rule
Some silhouettes only work in some fabrics. A mermaid gown collapses in chiffon. A bias-cut slip looks wrong in mikado. A modest A-line gown loses its line in unlined jersey.
Akwa's validator catches the obvious mismatches before render. If you pick a silhouette and a fabric that fight each other, you will see a warning before you commit. The picker UI also shows recommended fabrics per silhouette.
Cultural register matters
Choosing the right fabric for the cultural register is part of the design. Some examples:
- Yoruba ceremonial: Aso-oke for asoebi; lace and brocade for owambe statement; George wrappers for women's traditional.
- Igbo bridal: George; coral bead embellishment over silk satin or lace; Akwete for traditional registers.
- Hausa-Fulani: Brocade for Babariga; lightweight cotton with embroidery for everyday Atamfa.
- Gulf modest: Talli, Sadu weave, embroidered organza, abaya-grade crepe.
- South Asian bridal: Heavy silk, brocade, embroidered tulle, banarasi.
- Modest minimalist: Wool crepe, structured satin, heavy modal jersey for layering.
If you do not know what to pick
Use the Style Advisor flow instead of the wizard. Style Advisor asks you how you want to feel and what occasion you are dressing for, and suggests a fabric register that matches. You can override after.
