Akwa Atelier production
Akwa Atelier is the production tier above the catalogue licence model. Where the licence model gives you the brief to take to your own tailor, Akwa Atelier produces the garment directly: finished, packaged, and shipped from Rotterdam.
What it is
Selected catalogue listings carry an Atelier production state. The states you may see on the listing detail page:
- Not in production: licence-only. You take the brief to your tailor.
- Waitlist open: the founder is gauging demand. Add yourself to the waitlist; you are not charged. When the listing reaches Atelier production, waitlist members are notified first.
- Available to order: the production slot is open. You can order the finished garment.
Not every listing reaches Atelier production. The founder selects pieces where the construction grammar, fabric register, and cultural context warrant the cost and care of in-house production. Other listings remain in licence-only mode permanently.
What "Atelier production" means in practice
- The garment is made by Akwa's atelier partners under the founder's direct oversight.
- Fabric, trims, and embellishment are sourced to the brief's specification (not approximated).
- Each piece is made-to-order. Standard production timelines run 6 to 10 weeks depending on garment complexity.
- You receive measurements guidance after order; the atelier makes to your size.
- Final garment ships from Rotterdam with international tracking; buyer pays shipping.
How to join the Atelier waitlist
- Find a listing with the "Atelier production: waitlist open" badge.
- Enter your email and full name in the waitlist form on the listing.
- You receive a confirmation email immediately (the locked-template Akwa email format you have seen on Akwa correspondence).
- When the production slot opens, the founder emails waitlist members in priority order with order details, pricing, and lead time.
Adding yourself to the waitlist commits to nothing. You do not pay until you confirm the order at the priority email step.
Pricing
Atelier production pricing varies by garment complexity, fabric grade, and embellishment density. The price range is shown on the listing where the founder has authored it; otherwise, pricing is communicated via the priority email when production opens.
As an order of magnitude:
- Akwa Ready (capsule pieces): from EUR 129 to EUR 249
- Akwa Signature (statement pieces): from EUR 249 to EUR 650
- Akwa Couture (made-to-order ceremonial and bridal): EUR 800 to EUR 4,000+
Refunds and cancellations
Atelier orders move through three stages: order placed (refundable), sample approved (limited refundability), production confirmed (non-refundable, except for material defects on delivery).
The order email walks through these stages. The refund policy covers the technical eligibility framework.
Akwa Atelier vs licence tier
If you have your own atelier or trusted tailor, the licence tier (personal or commercial) is faster and cheaper. You buy the brief, hand it over, and your own tailor makes it.
If you do not have a tailor you trust for the cultural register of the design, or if you want the founder's direct hand on production, Akwa Atelier is the path. The premium covers sourcing, oversight, and the assurance that the garment matches the brief intent.
